CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Syrenne
Age: Appears in her 20s
Canon: The Last Story
Canon Point: Postgame
Character Information: Syrenne at the Last Story wiki.
Personality:
There are three major facets to Syrenne that need to be addressed. The face she wears in public, the face she wears around her friends, and the face she hides away.
The face she wears in public is the happy go lucky drunk. When the party returns from their adventures every day, she’s first at the bar and back at the table with a drink in each hand. She encourages the rest of the party to drink deep and cheer for the life they have and the bonds of their friendship. She drives herself by her id and her first impulses. She’s itching for a fight or a fun romp in the hay. She holds her friends close and speaks her mind. When there’s no peril or enemy to face, she simply goes for the thing she feels is what she wants.
While that face is one that her friends see, and is well and cheerily mocked by someone who is about to have a pint thrown at him, they also see her in battle when it actually matters rather than in the open air of the Coliseum. When the team is on the move, Syrenne doesn’t change much, but her guard still comes down some. She’s in the company of friends, long time allies, people she trusts. The snark flies, but it’s the sort that is backed by friendship. The low blow encouragements that are thrown out to people you know can take it and expect to sling it back. She trusts her friends, the mercenary company utterly with her life. She wouldn’t be fighting alongside them if they didn’t.
And then, lastly, there’s the face that she hides away even from herself. It takes Zael the whole game and Syrenne several pints before this face is shown to him. Lowell has probably seen it though she probably doesn’t remember. Mirania has seen it in a private moment. Yurick and Dagran don’t know at all. Like the rest of them Syrenne is a woman in pain. Her conviction to fight for her life as a mercenary came at the expense of her family, her home, all lost to tragedy. The male soldiers in her home were known to run, leaving the battles to the women, and that she was knocked out and survived isn’t something to be held as a miracle. She blames herself for not being there to fight. The others share versions of this regret and guilt in common with her, but she doesn’t want to show it to them if she can help it. She doesn’t want them to see that side of her and take pity on her. Her distrust of knights, of men, it all comes to that moment her home burned. She’s of the minority in the group who doesn’t care so much about being a Knight as helping to further their collective dream of meaning. She may play nice and happy and flirty with men in public and especially in the pub, but the men that she actually doesn’t feel the need to shroud herself around can be counted on one hand.
All told, Syrenne is a complex character dressed up as a superficial one. She plays happy and the face that she wants the world to accept, even if it makes her seem simple. As long as she keeps herself in high spirits the others are able to as well. She doesn’t need to prove herself to anyone. She’s got herself and her closest friends in her inner circle and as far as she’s concerned that’s all she needs. She may even give her heart to Lowell if the damned fool would stop joking around for five minutes.
